Today was an exciting day for the Temple Israel community! After years of collecting, we finally buried our holy materials in a Geniza! This opportunity is rare and I am thrilled that you all got to experience it in some way. In the classroom, we discussed what we do with the things we aren’t using anymore. Students had great ideas which included, giving them away to people who need them, recycling them and selling them so that someone else can enjoy them. While all those ideas are fantastic, we learned that we have to do something special with holy objects. To help gain a better understanding, we broke up into groups and sorted out some pictures.
These are the things that we would bury in the Geniza.
And these are some things that we decided we would not need to put in the Geniza.
